It really was inevitable. Every day, I become more and more of a tech bro stereotype. Don’t worry, I am not on the drip coffee grind yet.
So, what is this? Long and short, I want to review coffee so I decided it was time to do a running series. Welcome to brew bytes.
Last year, I took a trip to Italy and realized just how much I liked coffee. In Italy, I had an espresso double shot with almost every meal. As soon as I got back to the states, I bought a decent espresso machine, the Breville Barista Express, and I started tinkering with different beans.
I AM NOT A COFFEE EXPERT. I enjoy coffee.
Making espressos is also really fun and you can go as deep into the science of it as you want. For me, the most important factor when making an espresso is the beans (when they were roasted, how fine they are ground, etc).
I have been on a journey to find the perfect bean and I don’t think I will ever find it. That’s why I have now shifted my focus to finding the best beans. Each bean has something different to offer. I buy most of my beans from drinktrade.com and would recommend.
So, what will I review in this series?
BEANS (meme reference there somewhere).
I want to try out all the beans that I can and decide which I like the best. I have tried out several but never kept a record. I got a new bag of beans today and decided it was time I started!
Red Rooster Coffee: Funky Chicken
The description of the bean is that it is a medium roast level with notes of earthiness, ripe fruit, and milk chocolate.
The countries of origin are Peru, Nicaragua, and East Timor.
The grind setting I initially used on my Breville was 8 which was too fine, so I ended up switching to 9. Pressure on 8 was on the higher end and pressure on 9 was in the middle towards the lower end.
The smell of the beans is very smooth, chocolatey, and light. Once ground, the smell is accentuated.
The taste of the coffee is very fruity and chocolatey much like the description given. There isn’t a ton of depth when it comes to flavor. But the flavor that is there is good.
This bean has a good crema. This is largely due to the fresh roast. The bag was delivered today, and the beans were roasted Apr 30th.
Overall, 9/10!
It’s a bit light for my taste but the smoothness and chocolatey undertones are a nice touch.
Cheers,
Joe
I love it
