I recently got a starlink and I have been super happy with it. The latency is often lower than what I was seeing on my old DSL provider averaging around 25 ms. The download and upload rates are pretty impressive as well. Here is a chart of my recent speedtests:
Currently averaging between 250 and 350 down and 15 and 25 up. REALLY REALLY impressive for a satellite internet service (RIP hughesnet).
The only problem is that starlink by default puts you behind a CGNAT. I won’t go into much detail on what a CGNAT is. Feel free to read about it here. TLDR; Your public IP isn’t really public and is behind a second public IP. SO NO SELF HOSTING!
I need a public IP so I can expose some of my services to the internet and so that I can run a VPN back to my house through my UDM Pro.
Thankfully the fix is simple. Spend more money!
Most people go with the standard residential starlink plan. This plan DOES NOT include a public IP.
For $20 more, you can get the “Fixed Site Priority 40 GB Business Plan.”
Quite a mouthful. You get 40 GB of prio traffic (faster?) and most importantly a public IP. The best part is, you don’t need new hardware to have this plan. It works with your current hardware.
Don’t get me wrong, this is not a static public IP. It seems to change if you restart your starlink modem. For me this is not a problem (I just won’t restart my modem hehe).
Hope this info saves you a trip to reddit!
Cheers,
Joe
